About This Station
The Atglen Weather Observatory is powered by a Davis Wireless Vantage Pro2 Plus with 24-Hour Fan Aspirated Radiation Shield weather station. The data is collected every 3 seconds and the site is updated every minute. This site and its data is collected using a 6510USB WeatherLink Data Logger and a WEATHERBRIDGE IP Ethernet Linux Server. The station is comprised of a Solar powered Digital Temperature/Humidity Integrated Sensor Suite: upgraded Pro2 Tipping Spoon Rain collector, upgraded Temperature and humidity sensors enclosed in a solar-powered, 24-hour fan-aspirated radiation shield, Solar and UV sensors, Wireless Anemometer, Solar panel and situated in optimal positions for highest accuracy possible. For over two decades we have been publishing our weather station data to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) for inclusion in the Citizen Weather Observation Program (CWOP) and MesoNet; this data assists forecasters in understanding the microclimate in our area, as well as validating some of the forecast models. Our station identifier is "DW6440" (D6440 on the MesoNet West). It's owner, Professional Photographer, Ed Heaton is a trained, dedicated weather enthusiast. Ed, has tracked, recorded and posted Atglen's weather going on 28 years. Atglen Weather Observatory is a Weather Ready Network Ambassador for the National Weather Service and NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmosphere Administration). Ed is also a trained SKYWARN© Spotter. SKYWARN© is a National Weather Service (NWS) program developed in the 1960s that consists of trained weather spotters who provide reports of severe and hazardous weather to help meteorologists make life-saving warning decisions.
About This City
The earliest settlers in the vicinity of Atglen appear to have been the Philips and the Moores. The former owning much of the valley upon which the borough of Atglen now stands, and the latter the hilly area north of the borough west to Nobleville, south of present day Christiana. By 1875 the name of Atglen had been already accepted. On January 3, 1876, the Court in West Chester made a decree incorporating the vil!age of Penningtonville into a borough by the title of "the Borough of Atglen.'
